Imagine this: A thin, nervous man with thick glasses and an argyle pullover. He is propped in a dark corner, illuminated only by the cold blue glow of his iMac, which is plastered with yellow sticky notes. He speaks agitated gibberish, his mouth is dotted with foam. He twitches uncontrollably, occasionally scattering the takeaway containers from his desk. Seated next to the chair is an ageing one-eyed cat, his only friend.
This is Seriffus Nerdicus, an increasingly common affliction which, strangely, is suffered by everyone in our office. Our people live and breathe fonts, rolling on the floor in piles of terminals and counters. We're unable to see a movie without commenting on the opening credits. That's why we work together; because nobody else will.
Our chief designer is Wayne Thompson. With 17 years of agency and studio experience, he has spent that time trying to increase the profile of typography in design. He has also been a type designer for 11 years, which makes him very nerdy. But not the cool kind of nerdy, which is back in fashion. Just nerdy.
Wayne has designed custom typefaces for Australian and international clients, including many Sydney and Melbourne agencies and branding houses. Wayne's in-house typefaces include Halvorsen, the best-seller for Australian Type Foundry. His display fonts appear for sale around the world, including myfonts.com, Veer and t-26.
Nowadays, he just talks to the cat.
